Cursor quota ran out? What to do when you hit the usage limit

Updated

Short answer

Cursor's paid plans include a pool of usage that refreshes on a schedule: weekly on current plans, monthly on legacy plans. When the pool runs out, you can wait for the reset, keep going with prepaid credit or on-demand usage, upgrade, or use models that draw less from the pool. You can also hand the heavy implementation work to XCR, which runs inside Cursor and bills per task.

How Cursor usage limits work

As of October 2026, Cursor's usage and limits page describes two kinds of plan:

  • Current plans include one weekly pool for Cursor's own models. Third-party models aren't part of the pool; on plans that offer them, they're billed from prepaid credit at API list price.
  • Legacy plans split included usage into monthly pools, and you can turn on on-demand (pay-as-you-go) usage once they run out.

Either way, the models you pick decide how fast the pool empties. Unused included usage doesn't roll over.

Why your Cursor quota disappears

Agent mode is powerful because it reads files, edits, runs commands and tries again. Each step sends context to the model. A large feature can take many steps, and the most capable models cost more per step. One heavy afternoon can use a big share of a weekly pool.

How to check your Cursor usage

Open the usage page in your Cursor dashboard. It shows how much of your pool you've used, the next reset date and any prepaid credit. Your editor settings show the same remaining usage, and Cursor notifies you in the editor when you hit the limit.

What to do when the quota runs out

  1. Wait for the reset. Your pool refreshes weekly (or monthly on legacy plans).
  2. Use prepaid credit or on-demand usage. Keep working at the same per-model rates, and set a spending cap so there are no surprises.
  3. Upgrade. Higher tiers include larger pools.
  4. Choose models that draw less. Cursor's own models come out of the included pool on current plans.
  5. Hand big jobs to a specialist. Keep Cursor for editing, chat and review, and let a plugin do the heavy implementation.

Make your Cursor usage last longer

  • Start a new chat for each task instead of one endless thread.
  • Use @-mentions to attach only the files that matter.
  • Keep your project rules short. They're sent with every request.
  • Write the full requirement and acceptance tests up front.
  • Use the strongest model for hard problems, not for renaming variables.

Hand the heavy lifting to XCR

XCR is a free plugin that works like an AI switchboard for your AI coding tool. It plugs into Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and Grok Build, and takes over the expensive part of the job:

  1. Your tool hands the task over. When a request needs more than a small edit (roughly more than 30 lines, or more than one file), it goes to XCR first.
  2. XCR does the build. It reads the repository itself, writes the change on a copy of your project, runs your project's own checks (type check, lint, tests) and repairs failures within the task budget.
  3. You get a short report. Requirements done, files changed, check results and the exact cost.
  4. Your tool reviews and wraps up. It checks the change against your request and finishes anything that needs the internet, such as installing packages.

XCR routes each task to models from OpenAI, Anthropic and Google, so one account covers all of them. Small edits and quick questions stay in your tool, exactly as before.

Pricing: model cost plus 20%, plus $0.02 per task. Credit packs of $5, $10, $25 or $50. No subscription. In our 22-task self-test sample, XCR and GPT-6 Astra each completed 19 tasks, and XCR's estimated cost was 41.8% lower.

In Cursor you can install XCR with one click from the install page ("Add to Cursor"), or paste a single message into Cursor's chat. See how the plugin works.
