How to build an app with AI without coding
Updated
Short answer
Yes, you can build a small app or website with AI without knowing how to code. Start with one real problem, cut it down to a first version with no more than three features, then describe it to an AI coding tool and build it step by step. XCR's free Idea workshop helps you find the idea and write the plan, then connects you to the tools that build it.
What you can realistically build
AI coding tools are very good at small, focused software: a personal portfolio page, a booking form, a budget tracker, a habit log, a script that tidies a spreadsheet every Monday. People also call this vibe coding: you describe what you want in plain language and the AI writes the code. The trick is to start small and grow from there.
Step 1: Start from a real problem
The best first projects solve something annoying in your own life or work. "I keep losing track of who paid for the team lunch" is a better starting point than "a social network". You already know what good looks like, so you can judge whether the result works.
Step 2: Cut it down to a first version
Write down the one thing it must do, then at most three features. For a lunch tracker: add a payment, see who owes what, share a link. Everything else waits for version two.
Step 3: Write down how you'll know it works
Two or three plain checks, for example: "When I add a $12 payment from Sam, the total goes up by $12." AI tools work far better when they know what "done" means.
Step 4: Choose how to build
- No-code builders are quick for standard sites and forms, but you're limited to what the builder supports.
- AI coding tools such as Codex, Claude Code or Cursor write real code you own and can change in any way. They're more flexible, and with a clear plan they're easier than they sound.
Step 5: Build in small steps
Ask for one feature at a time, try it, then ask for the next. When something breaks, describe what you expected and what happened. That's all the AI needs.
Five first projects that work well
- A portfolio page with your photo, a few work samples and a way to get in touch.
- A trip expense splitter that shows who owes whom after a weekend away.
- A habit tracker that saves your streaks right in the browser.
- A photo sorter that renames a folder of pictures by date in one click.
- A calculator for your job, such as quotes, shipping costs or recipes scaled for a crowd.
Each one has a clear purpose, a short feature list and an obvious way to check that it works. That's what makes a great first build.
Start free in the XCR Idea workshop
The XCR Idea workshop is made for people who don't code.
- Chat about your idea, free. XCR suggests concrete directions and asks one question at a time.
- Get a first-version plan in a few rounds. A goal, up to three features and the checks that prove it works. You can edit, copy or download it as a project skill file.
- Connect and build. Sign up, then follow the steps to set up Codex, Claude Code or Cursor and connect the XCR plugin with a single paste. Your AI coding tool builds from the plan, and XCR does the heavy implementation and checks.
The workshop chat is free. When you start building, you pay per task: model cost plus 20%, plus $0.02 per task, with no subscription.

Can I really build an app with AI if I can't code?+
Yes, if you start small. A clear first version with up to three features and simple checks is something today's AI coding tools can build from plain-language instructions.
Is the XCR Idea workshop free?+
Yes. Chatting about ideas and getting your first-version plan is free. Building is billed per task once you start.
What do I need to start building?+
A computer running macOS or Linux (Windows through WSL), an AI coding tool such as Codex, Claude Code or Cursor, and an XCR account. The setup page walks you through each step.
Does the workshop build or host my app automatically?+
The workshop turns your idea into a plan. Your AI coding tool builds it on your computer with XCR, so you own the code.
