Use GPT, Claude and Gemini models in one tool, without juggling accounts
Updated
Short answer
You can combine models by switching between separate tools, routing one tool through a gateway, or adding MCP servers that call other models. Each means more accounts, keys and setup. XCR is the simpler route: one plugin and one account, and every coding task is routed to models from OpenAI, Anthropic and Google for you.
Why developers want more than one model
Different models are good at different things, and they're priced very differently. Many developers want a strong model to plan and review, and a faster, cheaper one to write the bulk of the code. Others just want to keep working when one tool's limit runs out.
Option 1: Switch between separate tools
Run Claude Code, Codex and a Gemini command-line tool side by side and pick one per task.
- Good: each tool is first-class and simple to start.
- Watch out for: separate subscriptions or API keys, separate limits, and copying context by hand from one tool to the next.
Option 2: Route your tool through a gateway
Some tools let you change the API endpoint. Claude Code, for example, supports pointing at an LLM gateway, and a gateway can forward requests to other providers' models.
- Good: one familiar interface.
- Watch out for: you run and secure the gateway, manage every provider key yourself, and some features may behave differently with models the tool wasn't built around.
Option 3: Add MCP servers that call other models
An MCP server can expose another model as a tool, so your main tool can ask it for a second opinion or a draft.
- Good: flexible and open.
- Watch out for: you still bring your own keys, and the main tool usually ends up reading and checking everything itself, so its own usage doesn't drop much.
Option 4: One plugin that routes for you
XCR works like an AI switchboard. Your AI coding tool hands over a coding task, and XCR connects it to suitable models from OpenAI, Anthropic and Google. You don't open extra accounts, manage provider keys or pick a model for every task.
- One account and one balance for every model XCR uses.
- Checks included. XCR runs your project's type check, lint and tests, and repairs failures within the task budget.
- A short report back. Your tool reviews the requirements, files and check results instead of redoing the work.
Hand the heavy lifting to XCR
XCR is a free plugin that works like an AI switchboard for your AI coding tool. It plugs into Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and Grok Build, and takes over the expensive part of the job:
- Your tool hands the task over. When a request needs more than a small edit (roughly more than 30 lines, or more than one file), it goes to XCR first.
- XCR does the build. It reads the repository itself, writes the change on a copy of your project, runs your project's own checks (type check, lint, tests) and repairs failures within the task budget.
- You get a short report. Requirements done, files changed, check results and the exact cost.
- Your tool reviews and wraps up. It checks the change against your request and finishes anything that needs the internet, such as installing packages.
XCR routes each task to models from OpenAI, Anthropic and Google, so one account covers all of them. Small edits and quick questions stay in your tool, exactly as before.
Pricing: model cost plus 20%, plus $0.02 per task. Credit packs of $5, $10, $25 or $50. No subscription. In our 22-task self-test sample, XCR and GPT-6 Astra each completed 19 tasks, and XCR's estimated cost was 41.8% lower.

Can I use GPT models inside Claude Code?+
Not natively, but you can through a gateway or an MCP server. With XCR installed, Claude Code hands coding tasks to XCR, which routes them to models from OpenAI, Anthropic and Google.
Can I choose which model XCR uses?+
XCR picks the model for each task, so you don't have to. You set the task budget, and every report shows the exact cost.
Do I need API keys from OpenAI, Anthropic or Google?+
No. Your XCR account covers model access for XCR tasks, billed from one prepaid balance.
Is XCR endorsed by OpenAI, Anthropic or Google?+
No. XCR is independent. Model and company names are used only to describe what XCR works with.
